Sphynx Health Care and Welfare

Keeping Your Sphynx Cat Healthy and Happy

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Prioritising Lifelong Sphynx Health

Sphynx cats thrive when proactive healthcare becomes part of their everyday routine. Regular veterinary visits, annual heart screenings, proper nutrition, hydration, and preventive care all play essential roles in supporting long-term wellness.

Important Areas of Sphynx Health:

  • Routine veterinary examinations
  • Annual HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) screenings
  • Vaccinations and parasite prevention
  • Digestive and nutritional support
  • Skin, nail bed and ear health cleaning and monitoring
  • Dental hygiene and gum care
  • Weight management and activity

Riviasphynx performs genetic testing and annual cardiac scans to help reduce inherited health risks in breeding lines.

CARE AND GROOMING

Specialised Care for Sphynx Cats

Despite their lack of fur, Sphynx cats require more grooming than many coated breeds. Their skin naturally produces oils that would normally be absorbed by fur, making regular cleaning essential.

Grooming  Recommendations:

  • Warm baths using gentle cat-safe shampoo - frequency can depend on individual cats  - suggest monthly bath with weekly wipe down with pet safe wipes.
  • Frequent ear cleaning to remove wax buildup - Suggest every 1-2 weeks using pet safe ear cleaner
  • Nail trimming and nail bed cleaning - every 2 - 3 weeks
  • Skin checks for irritation or dryness
  • Eye cleaning for occasional discharge - as often as required

Sphynx cats are also highly temperature-sensitive and benefit from:

  • Heated blankets or warm sleeping areas / beds
  • Soft clothing during colder seasons
  • Protection from direct sunlight and overheating

Riviasphynx recognises the importance of early socialisation and routine grooming from kittenhood, to help kittens become comfortable with handling and care for their new owners.

WELFARE AND SUPPORT

Supporting Emotional & Behavioral Well-Being:

Sphynx cats are exceptionally social and emotionally connected to their families. They crave interaction, stimulation, and companionship, often following their owners throughout the home.

Emotional Welfare Needs:

  • Daily interaction and affection
  • Mental stimulation through toys and puzzles
  • Safe climbing and exploration spaces
  • Consistent routines and companionship
